PROGRESS –
OUR POLICY
ADMINISTRATION &
FINANCE
The municipality’s operations are strong and well prepared to meet future challenges. During this term, we have reduced property taxes twice and intend to continue firmly on that path. We emphasize responsible financial management, discipline, and cost control in operations. The municipality’s human resources are key to delivering quality services, and we will continue to support staff, increase efficiency, and improve services for residents.

No automatic increases in property taxes
We will ease the burden on households by lowering the property tax rate when property values rise, thereby ensuring that residential property taxes do not increase beyond inflation during the term.

Lower costs for families
We will abolish meal fees in preschools and after-school programs and reduce costs for families through a new tiered sibling discount system, effective from the next school year.

Reduced wastewater fees
We will reduce the wastewater fee from 0.34% to 0.26% while ensuring long-term value and stability in operations through a 20-year financing plan with Hornafjarðarveitur.

More dialogue and stronger resident councils
We will strengthen dialogue and consultation between rural and urban areas and formalize the role of resident councils. At least one municipal council member will attend their meetings each time.

Better and smarter services
We have already taken significant steps to improve information provision. We will continue on that path with clearer communication, shorter administrative processes, and more accessible services. At the same time, we will implement smart solutions, such as resident cards and mobile applications, to improve the flow of information.
ECONOMIC- &
CULTURAL AFFAIRS
During this term, we have significantly strengthened the Hornafjörður Cultural Centre, including the reopening of Gamlabúð. We intend to develop a new economic policy, increase the diversity of jobs, and strengthen vibrant cultural life throughout the municipality.

A strong economy and a new economic policy
We will develop a comprehensive economic policy in consultation with residents and the business community, with the aim of strengthening the operating environment, increasing job diversity, and promoting year-round employment within the municipality.

Business environment and growth
We will ensure access to a variety of commercial land and facilities. We intend to find ways to support smaller businesses, for example, through reviewing fee structures and strengthening the Business and Research Fund.

Targeted marketing of the region
We will increase investment in marketing the municipality with the aim of strengthening its image, increasing the visibility of businesses, attracting more residents and job opportunities, and drawing more visitors to the area.

Vatnajökull National Park and the community
We will firmly advocate for the national park’s operations to support local business, settlement, and innovation within the municipality, and ensure that local residents have meaningful involvement in decisions affecting their immediate surroundings.

A vibrant and accessible cultural life
We will strengthen cultural activities and support innovation in culture and the arts. We will continue the development and maintenance of community centres and make better use of them in consultation with local residents.
WELFARE
We build on a strong welfare system and will emphasize ensuring that services are accessible, safe, and human-centered, and meet the needs of residents at all stages of life. We will improve housing solutions, strengthen healthcare services, and promote inclusion in the community.

Activity and well-being of older residents
We will provide elderly residents of Hornafjörður with a new ISK 30,000 leisure grant to support health promotion, courses, and other activities, with the aim of increasing participation and improving well-being. We will also place emphasis on encouraging more people to make use of such services.

Strong housing solutions and activity services
We will continue the development of residential facilities for people with disabilities, service apartments for the elderly, and facilities for sheltered employment.

Improved healthcare services
We will further intensify our efforts with national authorities to strengthen healthcare services in the area, including regular visits from specialist doctors and increased support for healthcare professionals. We will continue strong cooperation with HSU in providing healthcare services in Öræfi. We will also explore ways to strengthen home nursing services, including beyond standard daytime hours.

Inclusion and equal opportunities
We will promote the inclusion of foreign residents by subsidizing access to the BARA TALA app, thereby strengthening Icelandic language skills and facilitating their participation in the community.

More diverse housing for all
We will strengthen cooperation with Leigufélagið Bríet and similar housing organizations to increase the supply and development of rental housing throughout the municipality.
education- &
leasure
We emphasize strengthening education and expanding leisure opportunities for all children, from preschool through upper secondary education. We support families, strengthen infrastructure, and ensure that children and young people have more equal opportunities to participate in education and leisure activities throughout the municipality.

Increased support for families
We will double the leisure grant to ISK 140,000, broaden the rules for its use so that it can also be applied toward competition fees, and ensure that all children aged five and under receive a grant of ISK 30,000.

Sports and leisure facilities
We will prioritize the development and maintenance of sports facilities across the municipality. We will complete the finishing of the riding hall and improve the swimming pool area, including the addition of new water slides. We will begin preparations for a new leisure centre at Hofgarður and undertake necessary maintenance at Mánagarður.

Strong education and improved facilities
We will continue planning the future development of the Hornafjörður Primary School and improve working conditions for students and staff, including the construction of a dining hall at Hafnarskóli, improvements at Kátakot, upgrades to school grounds, and development of the central area by the swimming pool.

Strong sports and leisure activities for all
We will continue to support diverse sports and leisure activities in both rural and urban areas in close cooperation with youth associations and other stakeholders. We will ensure that all children, regardless of financial situation or place of residence, have access to such activities.

Student housing and future development
During the term, we will work toward reaching an agreement on the development of student housing in Höfn to further support education and the living conditions of young people in the municipality.
environment, planning & infrastructure
We aim to build a safe and attractive municipality with clear priorities in infrastructure development and planning. The focus remains on targeted projects, quality maintenance, and cooperation with the national government on key initiatives.

Development of sports and school facilities
We will undertake the construction of a new sports hall and an artificial turf field in Höfn and develop a comprehensive long-term vision for the central area with a focus on education and sports activities.

Rescue centre in Öræfi and continued strengthening of fire services
We aim to establish a rescue centre in Öræfi in cooperation with the national government and key stakeholders. During this term, we have significantly strengthened the fire service, including the purchase of two new fire trucks in Höfn and Öræfi. We will continue to strengthen equipment and infrastructure to ensure strong emergency response capacity across the municipality.

Clear and fair waste management
We will complete the design and begin improvements to the waste reception area. We aim to achieve better waste sorting and improve services, for example through extended opening hours at Gáran. Special emphasis will be placed on improving services in rural areas, including the development of a local collection point in Öræfi and improved access to carcass containers.

A safe and accessible local environment
We will continue to prioritize road user safety through systematic maintenance of roads and pathways, traffic-calming measures, and the completion of a continuous walking loop in Höfn. We will improve facilities in outdoor areas with benches, better lighting, and improved connectivity.

Strong transport and connectivity
We will continue to press the national government for infrastructure projects and increased predictability regarding new road alignments in Öræfi and Lón. We call for the immediate reduction of single-lane bridges and want to begin preparations for a tunnel under Lónsheiði. Telecommunications across the municipality must be significantly improved, and we will place increased pressure on telecommunications providers to fulfill this role.

Improved harbour infrastructure and increased safety
We will strengthen the harbour area and place special emphasis on safety through clear traffic management and access control. We will complete the design of a new processing pier this year and begin construction thereafter. During the coming term, we also plan to add floating docks and review access, fee structures, and services related to the landing of small-scale fishing vessels.

The airport – new opportunities for the future
Our goal is for Hornafjarðar Airport to be capable of receiving international flights. We will continue targeted work toward that development, as during the current term, to open new gateways for economic activity and tourism in the area.

A more attractive environment and appearance
We will place greater emphasis on beautifying the municipality through increased planting, development, and maintenance of public spaces. At the same time, we will improve safety at Leiðarhöfði, continue implementing the playground plan, and support diverse outdoor activities, cycling culture, and accessibility for all.

Planning and land supply
We will ensure a sufficient supply of residential building plots as well as diverse commercial land. Development of the Hagahverfi area is already underway and will ensure land availability in the coming years. At the same time, we will continue to support development in rural areas in close cooperation with residents and landowners.
